An interesting new German study shows that acupuncture works much better than conventional treatment–and is getting a lot of press because ’sham’ acupuncture worked just as well as ‘real’ acupuncture. This isn’t news–there are several studies out there that show that ’sham’ acupuncture works better than ’sham’ medication (placebo), so there’s definitely some physiological effect just from placing needles in the body.
But as usual in the press, they go for the hype instead of exploring what this really means.
One of the difficulties of studying acupuncture in a clinical environment is that Chinese medicine has a very sophisticated system of differential diagnosis. That means that if two people come to me for back pain they will probably end up getting very different acupuncture points needled. This is because treatment is individualized to the patient. There is no “back pain” point–and with hundreds of acupuncture points all over the body, there are literally thousands of treatment combinations that are possible.
Researchers overcome this little problem by simply eliminating the diagnosis. Yep, that’s right, they just take the diagnosis right out and randomly choose a set of points that everyone in the study gets needled.
What if they took used this same approach in a clinical trial for blood pressure medication? Would they just randomly administer this medication to volunteers without diagnosing whether they had high blood pressure to begin with? How meaningful would the results be if they did this?
My prediction is that if they actually compared real acupuncture–that is acupuncture using a differential diagnosis–alongside sham acupuncture–there would be a huge difference between the two. In fact, instead of the 47% effectiveness shown in this story, I think it would be closer to 80% (which is what we see in our clinic). This would be especially true if they used the Balance Method, a form of Taiwanese meridian therapy, like we do in our clinic.
P.S. Is anybody out there surprised that conventional treatment only has 27% effectiveness? Acupuncture is the treatment of choice for pain!
Wow! Healthpointe Community Acupuncture was one of eight finalists in the Rockville Economic Development Start Right Business Plan Competition. We were up against many successful companies–companies from the biotech industry, tech startups, an acoustical engineering company (with contracts with NASA!), and the list goes on. We are so honored to be considered as one of the most promising businesses in the DC metro area.
It just goes to show you that even our community’s business leaders recognize the quality of our clinic and Healthpointe’s ability to transform healthcare for Montgomery county residents. Thank you Rockville Economic Development for this great acknowledgment!

New visitors to this site may be wondering whether or not they should try acupuncture. It certainly is not for everyone, so let me guide you through some considerations as you try to decide.
The Needles Don’t Hurt
The #1 Question! I always explain to my patients that there is a difference betweeen pain and sensation. You will feel the needles, but they are not usually painful. In fact, you will be amazed at how good you feel during and after an acupuncture treatment. I had a patient tell me last week that she has discontinued getting massage therapy because she feels like acupuncture is far more relaxing and the effects last longer. For the true needle-phobe, there are also non-needle techniques we can use, so just ask your practitioner.
Acupuncture is Easy
You may have really felt like you’ve been through the ringer dealing with other health practitioners. You try to call when you have a break, like lunchtime or after work, and they have all left for the day. Then you have to wait weeks (or even months!) for an appointment. When you finally arrive for your appointment, you spend more time in the waiting room with your magazine than with your practitioner. Afterwards, you go through it all again at the pharmacy or the next practitioner you’re referred to.
At Healthpointe Community Acupuncture, we make it easy for you:
1)We have a 24-hour receptionist service that makes appointments and answers your questions around the clock
2)We have online appointment scheduling on our website
3)We can get you an appointment the same week that you call.
4)You rarely have to wait–we have you receiving your treatment in a comfortable recliner chair, soothed by the sound of fountains and relaxing music in no time
5)We take the time to get to know you; we are totally, 100% focused on getting you better with acupuncture–not on trying to sell you other expensive products or services to help our bottom line
Acupuncture is Affordable
In Montgomery County a typical acupuncture treatment is $85, with the first session costing even more–around $150! We believe that acupuncture should be accessible to everyone, and that you shouldn’t have to choose between paying your mortgage and getting acupuncture treatment. That’s why we charge an affordable sliding scale of $55-25 per treatment, with the first session’s sliding scale set at $70-40.
Acupuncture is Effective
You will find acupuncture is pretty effective wherever you go. . .and our group treatment environment actually enhances the results, making our style of acupuncture more effective than your typical clinic. Why does receiving treatment in a community setting enhance treatment results? The same reason that study after study proves that those in isolation, without support, get sicker and have worse health outcomes.
Our practitioners are trained in different styles of acupuncture from China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, but we primarily use a style of acupuncture called the Balance Method that uses points mostly on your arms and legs, hands and feet. Yes, believe it or not, if you come in for back pain, we put a needle in your hand! We have a private treatment room available for those who need it, but most prefer being treated in our luxurious recliner chairs.
Study after study proves acupuncture is effective for all sorts of health conditions. Your friends and family have told you it works for them. Why not try it yourself? Healthpointe Community Acupuncture makes it easy, affordable and effective.
